She received Academy Award nominations for her roles as the embittered "other woman" in Fatal Attraction 1987 and as the scheming antiheroine of Dangerous Liaisons 1988. She played Gertrude in Franco Zeffirelli's film of Hamlet 1990 and appeared as an opera star in Meeting Venus 1991. Her first film was The World According to Garp 1982; other screen appearances include The Big Chill 1983 and Jagged Edge 1985. More recently, she has had roles on Broadway in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and Michael Frayn's Benefactors.
